Phoebe was born to Trudy II at Dzanga in March of 2003.
On October 17, 2003 Scientist Andrea Turkalo who has been studying
the elephants at Dzanga for more than 15 years wrote:
Seems like bad news comes in threes. Two days ago I heard gunshot
to the north, finally got guards here and pointed them in the right
direction. Yesterday at the bai Phoebe was there but I'm afraid
her mom is dead. Phoebe was there with her grandmother who has a
new calf, a female, and an aunt, Trudy IV. Phoebe was trying to
suckle both her aunt who has no milk and from her grandmother who
refused. I think she'll make it but is obviously stressed.
No one knew if Phoebe would survive and she disappeared from the
clearing. Then almost a year later in November of 2004 Andrea wrote:
Good news, I think I saw Phoebe today at the bai. Trudy I, her
grandmother came into the bai from the north with her two youngest
offspring. While in the clearing she picked up Trudy II's (her daughter)
orphaned son. They vocalized to each other as they found each other.
After that later in the afternoon I observed Trudy I contact calling
and I felt it was someone outside the bai because her two offspring
and the orphaned grandson were standing next to her. Later the four
of them left via the northern end. Then just before 5:00 PM an infant
female entered and I think it might be Phoebe. This infant had tiny
tusks and her tail had really short hairs. I just looked at a photo
of Phoebe and the tail matches, so I think its Phoebe. It may be
hopeful thinking but I think it is her so perhaps I'll see them
all together this week....
Tiny Phoebe may have survived the loss of her mother, but how many
other orphans does poaching create who might not survive. You can
help stop the killings that left Phoebe an orphan by supporting
INCEF.
